Who we cook for

For families trying to keep loved ones at home — and out of institutions.

You’re doing everything you can to keep a spouse, parent, or relative at home. But cooking has become stressful, confusing, or just impossible — especially when there’s dementia, cancer, chronic illness, or mobility issues involved.

Meals are getting skipped, or your loved one will only eat “comfort food” you know isn’t helping.

You don’t have time or energy to plan and cook health-conscious meals every week.

You’re wary of nursing homes and “comfort-food-only” institutional diets, but you need help.

Religious or ethical dietary rules (Orthodox fasts, plant-based periods, etc.) are hard to keep up with.

How Drive By Gourmet Works

We’re built for long-term care, not one-off events. Here’s how we work with families:

Step 1

Care & Diet Consultation

We start with a conversation about your loved one’s health, memory, mobility, and eating habits — plus any religious or ethical dietary rules. The goal is to understand what’s actually happening at the table before we plan a single meal.

Step 2

Choose Your Plan

Together we decide which weekly plan fits best:

Step 3

Weekly Cooking, Delivery & Check-Ins

Each week, meals are prepared, packaged, and delivered to your home with clear instructions on how to cook or heat them. Over time, we adjust based on what your loved one is actually eating and how their condition changes.

Drive By Gourmet steps in as your weekly, health-conscious meal partner, so food is one less thing you have to worry about.

Why Families Trust Drive By Gourmet

Experience with cognitive decline & illness

Richard has cooked for residents with significant memory and cognitive challenges in retirement and VA settings, including daily care for a group of residents with dementia. He’s seen firsthand how food choices affect mood, appetite, and quality of life.

Long-term, weekly care (not events)

Since 2022, Drive By Gourmet has cooked every week for families who rely on consistent meals — understanding routines, preferences, and decline over time. This isn’t catering. It’s ongoing care.

Institutional insight, small-scale solution

After working in VA and retirement kitchens, Richard saw the limits of institutional food: time pressure, volume cooking, and “lowest-common-denominator” menus. Drive By Gourmet was created as the opposite — small, personal, and accountable.

Professional discipline + emotional intelligence

Years of cooking for up to 185 residents taught Richard the importance of time management, reliability, and clear boundaries — plus the value of listening to people who may not have many visitors. Families get both operational discipline and human empathy in one person.

Care, not just calories

Feeding someone who is aging or ill is not just about food. It’s about dignity, routine, and trust.

In institutional settings, Richard learned that highly nutritional food alone often goes uneaten, while pure comfort food gets eaten — but can quietly make health worse. The answer isn’t one or the other. It’s a thoughtful balance.

Drive By Gourmet designs menus that:

- Feel familiar and comforting enough to actually get eaten.
- Use thoughtful ingredients — olive and avocado oils, tallow and lard when appropriate, Celtic salt with trace minerals, low sodium, no canola or peanut oil.

- Respect religious fasts and traditions with Lenten and non-Lenten cycles, vegan/plant-based weeks, and culturally aware dishes.

The result is simple: meals your loved one wants to eat, prepared in a way that supports long-term health.

When food finally works, everything feels lighter.

One of our current families is a retired couple. The wife has dementia; her appetite had become erratic, and she often refused to eat. Through observation and experimentation, we discovered that certain familiar dishes — like fried cabbage from her childhood and Mexican favorites — consistently sparked her interest. Once we leaned into those patterns and balanced them with better oils, lower sodium, and thoughtful sides, her eating became more regular and mealtimes less stressful for everyone.

“She actually started eating again when we tried Richard’s food.”
